Owl Cup Cosy

This pattern fits cups with a diameter of 8-10 cms, or more pending individual variations of yarn and needle gauge. The cabling provides extra stretch factor.

The cosy pictured above is knit in a heavier weight yarn that’s a little on the fuzzy side, so the pattern isn’t quite as clear, but the ribs align nicely with the owls’ feet and ears.

Options for joining the cosy include tying top and bottom edges together with the loose ends and sewing a button and cord loop to go through between the mug handle, or by making a button-up tab as described below.
Directions –

Cast on 40 stitches

Row 1 – k3, p1, *k2, p1, repeat from * to last 3 st, k3.
Row 2 – p3, k1, *p2, k1, repeat from * to last 3 st, p3.
Row 3 – k3, p1, *k2, p1, repeat from * to last 3 st, k3.

Row 4 – p2, k2, [p8, k4]x2, p8, k2, p2.
Row 5 – k2, p2, [k8, p4]x2, k8, p2, k2.
Row 6 – p2, k2, [p8, k4]x2, p8, k2, p2.
Row 7  – k2, p2, [c4f, c4b, p4]x2, c4f, c4b, p2, k2.

Row 8 – p2, k2, [p8, k4]x2, p8, k2, p2.
Row 9 – k2, p2, [k8, p4]x2, k8, p2, k2.
Row 10 – p2, k2, [p8, k4]x2, p8, k2, p2.

Row 21 – p3, k1, *p2, k1, repeat from * to last 3 st, p3

Cast off.

Button-up tab –

Pick up and knit 10 central stitches on one side of the cosy (left or right, depending on whether you want the buttons facing towards you or outwards.)
Knit right side, purl wrong side for 6 rows, or until the cosy suits your cup.
On right side, knit a simple buttonhole row – ssk, yo, k to last 2 st, yo, k2tog.
Bind off.
Position buttons and sew on. Make yourself a nice hot drink and enjoy! 😀
