Little Houses Cosy

littleboxes

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

Looking for the perfect little stocking stuffer for a friend? Time for the annual Kris Kringle torture at work? Just want your hot chocolate to stay hot? Got a little bit of special yarn leftover from another project? Here’s a quick and fun solution! (Knit it in blue with an extra repeat of the windows row for a Tardis-loving friend  : )

The cosy pictured used a dk/sport weight on size 4 needles, and is just over 8 cms tall. A heavier weight would also work well.

Key –
st(s) – stitch(es)
ssk –  slip, slip, knit, or any other left leaning decrease
k2tog – knit 2 together, or alternate right leaning decrease
s2kp – central double decrease, slip 2 kwise, k1, pass slipped stitches over.

Instructions –

Cast on 33 st.
Knit 3 rows of seed stitch, alternating knit and purl stitches.

Rows 1, 3 & 5:  k2, *yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 2 (and all wrong side rows):  k2, p to last 2, k2
Row 7:  k2, *yo, ssk, k5, k2tog, yo, k1, repeat to last st, k1
Row 9:  k3, *yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k3, repeat to last st, k3
Row 11:  k4, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k5, repeat to last st, k4
Row 13:  k5, *yo, sk2p, yo, k7, repeat to last st, k5

Finish with 3 rows seed st and bind off.

Options for joining edges include tying top and bottom ends together with the loose ends and sewing a button and cord loop to go through mug handle, or making a tab as follows.

Pick up and knit 12 st from the centre of one side. This part will go through the handle.
Knit right side, purl wrong side for 6 rows.
Knit a buttonhole row, beginning: ssk, yo, k to last 2 st, yo, k2tog.
Bind off on wrong side.

Please be generous towards my first attempt at a non-handdrawn chart. The area inside the seed stitch dots is the repeat section. Repeat this so that you have 3 houses on your cosy.
