Hoe, hoe, hoe!

Christmas seems to be the season of sizable renovations in this household. Last year we took off half the wall at the side of the house on New Year’s Eve and replaced it with a giant window (well, giant in proportion to our little house, at any rate) This year’s project is terracing the area at the end of the house, to make a sort of outdoor lounge room for the warmer months.

We had contemplated doing it all by hand, but eventually reconsidered, and with the help of a friend and his backhoe, this is the result (as seen through last year’s window ; ) I don’t know who was more excited about having a tractor in the backyard; Boy or his Daddy! Especially when the tractor decided to stay for a sleepover.

Sadly however, a wheel fell off the tractor, so for now we’ll concentrate on hoeing out a foundation for the retaining wall instead.. Which is what I should be doing right now, instead of twaddling on the ‘puter.

All the activity was enough to make the neighbour’s chickens curious, so they came over to inspect our progress.

(Is it my imagination, or is there is something reminiscent of Macbeth’s three witches about them?)

They also like to hop up the back steps and see what’s for breakfast. It’s a cyclical reciprocity; they eat our scraps, and in exchange we eat their eggs.. I think we get the better end of the bargain, but they don’t seem to mind.

The other exciting event in this household is Boy’s walking. He’s been able to take a few steps at a time for months now, but decided Christmas night was the time to rise up and go forth. No doubt life will never be the same again!

To commemorate the event we have an suitably blurry photo of his delight.

And arriving safely in Mummy’s arms, at the end of a protracted 3 metre hike.. Exciting times.
